Ancient people once believed that the world was situated on an enormous turtle shell, so the territories did not have to swing in the universe and the land could be stabilized, allowing men to survive and thrive. In Taiwan, turtles are regarded as an auspicious animal. In Chinese, “turtle” sounds like “return;” in Taiwanese, it sounds like “long time,” symbolizing the return of wealth and health. At Taiwanese folk religious activities, we can see people’s reverence for “return,” like the ancient tomb on Tangchi Mountain in Anping, where the layout of the ancient burials looks like a large turtle when looked at from above, carrying the ancestors’ final return.
